I should clean this room.

I forgot to turn the flash off in this picture... But anyway, the mirror in the room with my computer shows reflection. The light from the camera flash hits the mirror's surface and bounces back off. When the light hits my eye, it traces the light source and creates an image behind the mirror. The image is the same distance as the original. The same idea is applied to the various other objects in the room.

I would have done something about physics at senior prom, but I don't want to find my camera right now. The above picture was an early morning in Portland, Oregon about 3 months ago. It wasn't really raining or snowing, and there wasn't a whole lot of fog. The weather that day was like a mixture of the three. The light waves emitted by the sun hit random particles in the air and reflects off. This creates a fuzzy appearance to the sun.

This is the picture of the player piano at Macy's (Ala Moana). Three notes are being played in this picture (I have no clue which notes). When the key is pressed down, a vibration was sent through the wires. The vibration has the same frequency as the natural frequency of the string. Resonance makes the surounding air vibrate, creating a sound. The frequency of each string is determined by the tension of the string, its density and its length. Each note has a unique string.

My phone is usually on vibrate. So it started vibrating when my sister called. The desk it was resting on began to vibrate as well, along with the air surrounding it. The vibrating phone acted as the driving force, and the table showed resonance. The driving force matched up with the natural frequencv of the table, causing it to vibrate at the same frequency. The phone also created waves in the air, making a buzzing noise.

This Saturday was the Ala Moana show for the dance program. As each group entered the stage, the music started playing. On the stage, the intensity of the music was much greater than it was from the audience on the second floor above Center Stage. Because the stage was closer to the speakers (the source of the sound waves), the radius was smaller, so the intensity was much stronger. With the stronger sound intensity, the level was higher and made the music seem louder while on stage.

This weekend, we visited my uncle on the North Shore. Outside his house, you could see a white transformer on a telephone pole across the street (it probably wouldnt have worked for the extra credit). The transformer either increases (step up) or decreases (step down) the amount of voltage running through the wires. In this case, it is a step down transformer from high voltage in the wires to 120 volts found in sockets. The ratio ofnumber of loops surrounding the iron cores indicates the ratio of the initial and final voltage.

Next to my computer, my dad has about 5 different picture frames attached to the metal desk by magnets. Each magnet has a magnetic field surrounding it and both a north and south pole. When it gets near the metal, which has magnetic properities, it rearranges the metal's domain. The domain is now organized and gives the metal a temporary north and south pole. This allows the magnets to stick on to the desk.

My sister (Janelle) and her friend (Sydney) got really bored yesterday at Senior Luau when they were passing out prizes. So they decided to make a fish fly. Attaching 4 balloons to the already light blowup fish, the upward pull of the balloons was greater than the force of gravity. Each balloon wanted to float upwards, and the five together made the fish fly. When it was in the air, the air conditioning pushed the balloons around their heads, acting as an outside force. The outside force pushed it around until Janelle caught it and pulled it back downwards.

My dad came back from his "business trip" with a group of his friends two weeks ago. This is a clip from their second day, trying to outdo each other... I couldn't really open up my camera to show the capacitor, so I'm just going back to projectiles, potential and kinetic energies, and gravity. When he approaches the ramp, most, if not all, of his energy is now kinetic. After he hits the jump, gravity is the only force acting upon him (a=9.80 m/s). At the top of the jump, the vertical velocity is zero and he begins to drop. When he hits the ground, he still has momentum and energy, and thus bounces off. (It left a huge bruise on his leg...they took a picture.)

I keep my scissors in my pencil case (there isnt much room in it anyway). The pens and pencils rub against the metal part of the scissors and creates friction. The friction transfers electrons from the surfaces of the pencils onto the metal blades. The metal scissors now has a negative charge. When I put it next to the neutral pin, it polarizes the pin creating an attractive force betweent them. (I think)

This past weekend, the neighbor's cat decided to jump of the railing of the porch (he's trying to run away from the two puppies). So once again, the cat was in freefall for under a second, when the only force acting on him was gravity. Of course, he decided to scare me again by climbing the 5.5 ft high fence and jumping off it without a care in order to chase a few birds. When he was scaling the wood fence, the force from his legs "pushed" up, counteracting the force of gravity, allowing him to climb the wall with apparent ease.

Yesterday, during low tide most of the reef was exposed to the winds and small waves. While low tides often do reveal the areas closest to the shore, this was one of the first times that a great amount of the reef was above water. Tides are controlled by "tidal forces" which is an effect of the pull of gravity. Because of Newton's universal law of gravity, the moon and the sun exert a certain amount of force upon the Earth and the particles of the water. The ocean changes according to the changes in the distance between the two bodies (r).

On New Years Eve, I enjoyed a fairly quiet night (I could actually see the street through the smoke), but we could still hear the larger fireworks echo through the valley. The sound waves emitted from the firework is sent throughout the valley, bouncing off anything and everything. I'm not sure you can see anything in this clip, but the flash from the various explosions always came a bit before the the actual sound, depending how far the actual explosion was from our location (From across the street to the firework shows at various hotels).
